Behind the Music

What It Takes to Bring Music to the Stage

Every concert begins months before opening night.

When most people buy concert tickets, they naturally think they’re paying for two hours of beautiful music. In reality, those two hours are the culmination of months of planning and hundreds of behind-the-scenes details.

Months before opening night, music is selected, musicians are contracted, rehearsal schedules are created, venues are reserved, music is rented, programs are designed, volunteers are organized, and countless details come together to create a memorable concert experience.

All of these preparations require significant resources. You have probably heard that ticket sales only cover about one-third of these costs. The rest comes from generous people and organizations who believe that great music enriches our community.

What it takes to ensure a successful concert season

🚗 Bringing the Orchestra Together

Musicians travel from across Florida and beyond. Coordinating travel, hotels, meals, and rehearsal schedules begins long before the first rehearsal.

🎼 Securing the Music

Most orchestral music is rented, not owned. Publishers charge rental fees for every performance, and every musician needs professionally prepared parts.

🎭 Preparing the Venue

Every venue becomes a concert hall. Chairs, music stands, percussion, lighting, and equipment must all be transported and arranged before the audience arrives.

📖 Creating the Concert Experience

It’s the little things that count. Programs are designed, tickets sold, volunteers coordinated, and hundreds of details managed so the evening feels effortless.

💼 Supporting Operations

Every performance depends on year-round operations. Musicians, insurance, technology, ticketing, marketing, and administration keep the Philharmonic running long after the applause ends.

❤️ Fund Raising & Community Support

Donations and partnerships make the magic happen. Board members, staff, and volunteers spend countless hours securing the donations and partnerships that are essential for the Philharmonic’s financial needs.
